Middle Eastern Petrochemical Plants Are Targets of Hackers

A recent article in the New York Times, highlights why network managers and software developers are having to take great care in implementing systems. http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/09/15/middle-eastern-petrochemical-plants-are-targets-of-hackers/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_php=true&_r=0 The worry of course is that as more and more devices become IP aware; they too will become a target for the undesirable elements in computing. I recently drove past a bus stop with one of the new wi-fi enabled electronic departure time signs; it was in the middle of a reboot that had hung. There plain to see was the IP address of the network, and with just a laptop and some simple open source tools I could have quite happily played with the sign and probably the whole network. A lot more care is required of all these type of devices in the future. How often have you seen the cash point machine at a bank, in a never ending reboot of Windows?
